CAR GARAGES

Car Garages

Many people who are buying or renting a home or apartment think car garages are a bonus. If you can find something that has one or two, you have a space to keep your car secure and safe from bad weather. The thing about car garages is that most people don’t end up using them to park a vehicle. Many people I know end up using car garages for storage, work space, or even convert them into extra space on their home. No matter what you use a garage for, they are definitely a great addition to any home or property.

Some homes come with car garages attached right to the home. Often you can walk out of your kitchen and into your garage without having to go outside. This is wonderful for rainy or snowy days. If you have an automatic door opener, you won’t have to get out in the bad weather at all. Of course, if there is four feet of snow, you will have to shovel that, or you won’t be going anywhere.

You can also get car garages that are detached. This means you will have to walk outside to get to it, but these can be cheaper than adding an addition to the side of your house. Some of these are just carports, which means there is a roof that offers some protection from the weather but the side may or may not be covered. This is great if you don’t have a lot of money, but want to keep some weather away. These are also good to help keep your car cooler when parked in the summer months. The interior won’t get as hot if it is parked in the shade, because the sun is not beating down on it directly.

There are some safety considerations when you use car garages. In the past, homeowners have made the mistake of idling their car in the garage. This is especially dangerous if your garage is attached, and even more dangerous if your car garages are underneath your living space. When you idle, your car or truck is filling the area with fumes. When you do this under a home, the fumes can leak up through the house. There have been some families that have faced tragedy because of this. If you need to idle your car, make sure it is outside before you let it sit. This might not be a huge problem in detached car garages, but remember that the fumes will build up in any enclosed space, so open the door before you idle.
