GAZING GLOBE

Everyone has their own sense of style. Some people like modern décor other people like traditional. I feel that it is a good thing that we all have different likes and dislikes or the world we be a boring place. I may not choose a certain style for my family home, but that doe not mean that I want everyone’s home decorated like mine. The important thing is to have your style reflect the people that share the house with you.

My husband and I agree on most decorating ideas. We are both from similar family backgrounds so we bring into our home some of the decorating ideas that we grew up with. The outside of our home is a different matter. He grew up in a small town. The family home is on a city lot. His mother had a vegetable garden in the back, a few bushes in the front of the house and a flower planter along the driveway that she puts geraniums in every year. She does not have any other flowers, pots or ornaments in the yard. I grew up on a dairy farm. The family home sat in the middle of four acres. Mom had apple trees, plum trees and a pear tree. We had lilac bushes, bridal wreath bushes and a wide assortment of perennials. As soon as the snow melted until the first killing frost there were flowers blooming in one area of the yard or another. Mom also planted many annuals as well as a vegetable garden. She had trellis with grapes and other vines. She always had a gazing globe amongst the flowers. We also had wooden lawn chairs that were placed around the yard so you could sit and enjoy the flowers, fresh air and relax.

I loved my parent’s yard. As a kid I spent hours mowing, weeding and playing in that yard. It was a mini vacation to grab a book and to sit in one of the chairs amidst the flowers. My friends thought the gazing globe was really neat, because not very many people had them back then. When my husband and I moved to the country I wanted to have a peaceful welcoming yard like my parents had. I was so excited when I found a silver gazing globe like my mother had. I bought it and put it in the yard to surprise my husband. He hated it. He insisted that the gazing globe looked gaudy and he wanted me to take it back. I explained that it would look great nestled in the flowers that I had planted. I reminded him of the gazing globe that was in my parent’s yard and how nice it looked. He knew that he was not going to change my mind so that gazing globe is still in our yard, however he does complain about it as often as possible.
