Fashions change each year, and sometimes things come and go so fast that they are out of style before you can get them home. This isn’t the case for all clothes though, there are some pieces that are timeless, and when it’s time to put them away until the next year, you have to take care of them so that they will be good to go when they come back out of clothes storage. There are many small things you can do to keep your favorite items safer while packed away so that they come back out of storage in the best shape possible.

When it comes time for clothes storage, the first thing you have to do is to wash everything. I know this sounds like common sense, but there are times when we forget to do this. Even if you have not worn the item and it is sitting in your dresser, you should still take the time to rewash it. When you put items into clothes storage that have any type of debris on them you are going to have problems with odor when you get them back out. Though nothing will completely work to keep all of the dust and other fabric irritants out of your stuff before you put it away, washing beforehand will at least help minimize what is in there.

You don’t have to use mothballs any longer when you want to preserve things put away in clothes storage. They don’t smell good, though they do tend to work. There are other things out there that will works as well, and you won’t have to put up with the bad smell that comes with the mothballs. You might even consider a cedar chest for clothes storage, as the cedar acts, in a way, like other types of insect repellent.

If you are just putting something away for a few months, you can buy garment bags for clothes storage. These are great for suits and dresses that you don’t wear very often, but you don’t want to put them away where you can’t get to them. Garment bags will protect your clothes but still allow you to have easy access to them in your closet. This method of clothes storage is great when you want to grab and go as well. You can put everything you need within the bag so it’s ready to go when you need it.
