Building Permit

I don’t know a lot about the building permit, but I do know that if you want to build anything, or even upgrade, remodel, or fix anything, you must have one in most places in our country. If you plan to do any of these things, you have to check with your local ordinances and laws to find out what you need and what you have to do to go about getting one. Though you usually won’t have a problem, you may occasionally run into a problem with zoning or perhaps an idiot on a power trip.

I only say that because someone I know once had to get a building permit and she had a heck of a time. They were allowed to get it, but they run into a lot of problems once the construction began. She owns a lot of property, so she was very familiar with getting a building permit and what she needed to do to stay within the law. She never had any problems until recently. Someone must have been having a bad day, or perhaps someone just had it in for her, I’m not really sure which.

She was planning on putting a modular home on a piece of property that she had owned for a long time. They had to grant her the building permit, but they apparently wanted to give her a hard time about it. She first had to pour the foundation, and then the house would be brought in and set on top of it. They got nasty with her, and told her that if she didn’t display the building permit in a window as per regulation, they would shut her down. Because the house was not there yet, and they were just digging the hole for the foundation they knew they had her over a barrel, so to speak.

The problem with putting the building permit in the window was that there wasn’t a window present. Where was she supposed to put the building permit? They didn’t care about this small detail and kept after her. Finally she went into her shed and pulled out an old window that she had removed from her house a few months before. She set that window on the property that she was developing and taped the building permit to it. Though this wasn’t what they had in mind, she did do just as they asked. Her house went up as scheduled.
