BLACK OUT CURTAINS

Doesn’t it seem as though you have to trade fashion for function sometimes? A perfect example is in the bedroom on the window. We either purchase black out curtains or blinds which allow us to sleep for as long as we want, when we want. The alternative is attractive window coverings which may or may not afford the same light blockage. Wouldn’t it be a perfect world if we could find curtains that blocked the light while looking aesthetically appealing?

The world just may be more ideal than any of us realized. I went shopping for window coverings for our new home recently and was delighted to find black out curtains that not only did the job they claimed to do but also looked great. They were also available in so many different sizes that I ended up buying a set for the master bedroom as well as the children’s rooms.

New babies seem to sleep on their own schedule which can make it difficult for an adult who is accustomed to sleeping when it’s dark outside. That is one of the reasons I was so thrilled to find a set of black out curtains that I didn’t need to have altered to fit the window in our bedroom. We bought them and my husband and I hung them up straight away. We closed them to give them a try and it was probably close to three o’clock in the afternoon, but the curtains really did make the entire room dark.

We bought a blue set for the baby’s room. Although they did have patterns that were more appropriate for an infant, I wanted to ensure that we could use the black out curtains even when our son was several years older. For our daughter’s room we purchased a set of black out curtains that had stripes on them. We knew that we’d be able to incorporate them into the design on her room the way it was now and in the future as well.

Cleaning them was a bit of a concern for me. With traditional cloth curtains you can often simply put them in the washing machine and then the dryer. Others did have to be sent to the dry cleaners. When I purchased the black out curtains, the sales associate explained that each set came with instructions that included how to properly hang them as well as the best method of cleaning the curtains to ensure no damage was done to them.

For anyone who wants to block the light coming into their room, they really are the only solution. Blinds can also help with sunlight but black out curtains seem to work the best in my experience. They are affordable and with all the styles that are currently available you’ll have no trouble finding a set that match your room.
